I’ve often written that the future of local sports coverage lies not with the two minute TV report, but online in real time. Local affiliates have to stop thinking we’re waiting until the late news to get the scores and highlights. Newspapers have to realize we’re certainly not waiting until the next day for the “game story.” ESPN has moved into Boston with its ESPNBoston.com offering and it presents sports in a way native to the Web. It may also be picking up one of Boston’s best sportswriters. TheBigLead.com reports Gordon Edes will join ESPNBoston.com shortly. Edes was a longtime sports guy at the Globe before joining Yahoo! Sports. ESPNBoston will be picking up a superstar, should Edes join. Online sports is no longer the domain of national sites and local bloggers – we’re seeing national sites usurp the locals by establishing local “affiliates.”
